2021 Holiday Gift Guide: Avoiding Clutter by Gifting Experiences over Things

holiday gift organization

The last two months of the year can be full of wonderful memories, busy schedules, and exciting events.

The last thing I want to do is spend hours in stores, waiting in lines, and wrapping presents. That’s why this year I am shifting to experience-based gift giving!

Giving an experience can be personal, thoughtful, and less time-consuming than finding the perfect material gift. Plus, these gifts are less likely to end up cluttering your home or sitting in a box in someones hallway closet. Let’s be honest… we’ve all gotten that gift that we don’t want but can’t get rid of!

How I Complete My Holiday Shopping

I start with - surprise - creating an organized list!

Who do I need to shop for this year? What experiences could work? Download my free PDF for a simple list and my top experience-based gifting ideas.

Here are some brainstorming questions to help you in choosing the perfect gift:

  • What is important to this person?

  • What hobbies do they have?

  • What will help them feel loved this holiday season?

  • What can they do with their family, on their own, or with me?

For example, when shopping for my best friend I know they would rather received quality time with me over new clothes or accessories, my usual go-to’s. This year I decided to get us both in-home facials so we can enjoy some time together to destress, without contributing to the clutter in each other’s homes. I bought a gift card and completed the booking online in less than thirty minutes.

Experience-Based Gift Ideas

The best part of choosing experiences for gifts? I can do all my shopping from my kitchen table.

Ready for some more experience-based gift ideas?

1) Events + Outings: Think local! What about tickets to see their favorite band or sports team? A gift card to their favorite restaurant or coffee shop is always a great one. Knowing someone’s go-to spot and including a thoughtful note makes this gift even more personal.

2) Classes: This is a great one for your kids or parents! Think pottery making, cooking classes, or passes to a workout class they have always wanted to try.

3) Memberships: I love this idea for families! Most museums, aquariums, zoos, and children’s centers offer yearly passes that make great gifts.

4) Personal Favorites: My favorite ideas for this year? Gifts that reduce stress. Try a gift card for a massage, a facial, or professional organizing.

Happy gift giving! Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season.
